One year of producing organic honey! Assessment and objectives for 2014-2015
April 7, 2014
Dear friends, we’ve just finished our assessment of the 2013-2014 production cycle at our organic bee-farm project in Romania. We’re happy to announce that so far the results go beyond our initial projections.
Our main conclusions:
We’ve started with 20 units (hives) and entered the new production cycle with 23 (a natural growth of 3 bee colonies);
We had a projected honey yield of less than 400 kilos and ended up with almost 500;
Not only that we were able to cover the operational costs from our sales of honey, but we managed to register a steady growth in the revenue which will be reinvested into the next production cycle.
These results allowed us to adjust the projections for the cycle (2014-2015) on the growth. Objectives for the current cycle:
Grow the farm to 35 strong colonies (add 12 to the existing 23) and take them through the next winter, continuing to use only traditional methods (no artificial stimulants, no antibiotics, no exposure to chemicals or fertilizers in the harvesting areas);
Obtain a honey yield of around 1,000 kilos;
Launch a brand under which this project will further develop: “Melly D’Or” (Note: since this assessment we have registered the brand and we’re currently working hard to put it on the local market). Set up an interactive website on which not only that we’ll sell our products, but we’ll keep our clients updated with our plans and available stocks. We aim to grow this brand into a and .
Diversify the range of our products to include: concentrate of propolis, various honey specialties (linden, sunflower and forest honey with locally picked nuts, petals and honeycomb), raw pollen capsules and propolis tincture;
Further our commitment to and ;
During the summer months, together with other local beekeepers (small farms), the members of our project will bring kids on location and introduce them to the fascinating world of bees. This is part of our commitment to contribute also to informal education.
In general, if the weather will be on our side (it hasn’t been the case so far this year), we hope that during this cycle will consolidate what is to become a very lucrative business and a new brand on the organic products market. We will prove that it’s actually possible to put on the market clean products, with a very low carbon footprint and still keep it profitable.
We’ll keep you posted. And yes, a huge THANK YOU to all our friends and loyal customers who made this possible and keep the dream alive!
